We visited Eagle Cove, Reed Creek and Cacaway Island for Labor Day weekend. This reminded us of the very best of what the Chesapeake has to offer for the weekend sailing family. We had a great time, and we didn’t experience any crowded anchorages, surprisingly. Here are the 3 locations that we anchored:

We left the dock and quickly pushed up to Eagle Cove on Friday evening. We were nervous that the anchorage would be full of boats and we would have nowhere to drop our anchor.
We cruised under the Bay Bridge. I am always amazed sailing under a bridge, and it reminds me of our experience sailing in NYC up and down the East River. It is a view that few people get to experience. The amount of engineering, construction and sacrifice that was leveraged to build these bridges and the amount of traffic and commerce that is enabled is inspiring.

We made it before dark! We had plenty of space to anchor, but I must admit that it took us a couple of attempts. The first time, we felt a little too close to the boat in front of us. So we pulled up and went around in front of them. The views from this side of Gibson Island did not disappoint as we were very close to the horse farm.

Waking up next to such a beautiful and serene landmark is truly a blessing. We were anchoring alongside our friends aboard Delfin. They have a daughter in Audrey’s school class and we have been friends since coming to Maryland. They are absolutely wonderful people. We all headed for Reed Creek which is across the Bay and up the Chester River. We took the opportunity to sail as far as possible.

Eventually we made is up to Reed Creek and dropped anchor. Once again, it took us a couple of tries to find the right spot. We got a little too close to shore so we backpedaled and found a safer location. We parked and popped the hatches to get some air flow in the cabin. There were a good number of boats here, but there was plenty of room for everyone. We paddle boarded all over this anchorage and explored the shore. There were Eagles and other birds here.

Late that night, the stars lit up the sky. The anchorage was pitch black. I noticed a sailboat coming in under sail. That guy had some mad skills. The next day, we headed up to Cacaway Island up Langford Creek. We parked right in front of a white mansion.

We took the dinghy all around the island and enjoyed the stunning sunset looking out across our friends raft up. We didn’t join in the raft up, because they planned to break apart after the sunset. You have admit that the color and painting of the sky is tremendous.

We picked up anchor the next morning and pounded into some stiff winds and steep waves departing the Chester River. That was not completely expected. On the way out, a pair of beautiful motor yachts passed us. This capped off another restful and happy weekend aboard our reliable and well-built Hallberg-Rassy.

Weekends like this remind us how much friends mean to us. We take every opportunity that we can to be with our friends and enjoy their company. We will do this again next season!
